DENVER, COLORADO, USA, September 3, 2008. The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) and 175 other companies and organisation call for the extension of the renewable energy and energy efficiency tax credits when Congress reconvenes in September.
The Clean Energy NOW campaign has sent a letter to the US Senate and US House of Representatives urging immediate action to extend the renewable energy and energy efficiency tax credits. The campaign also plans a high-profile presence at the Democratic and Republican National Conventions.
A 130-foot wind turbine blade owned by Vestas will be on display at the two conventions in Denver, Colorado, and Minneapolis, Minnesota, to attract attention to the issue.
“More than 100,000 American jobs and US$19 billion in clean energy investment are at stake,” says Randall Swisher, AWEA’s Executive Director. “After lots of effort over the past year, the short Congressional window in September looks like the last chance for legislation to extend these overwhelmingly popular clean energy credits before they expire.”
“We want Members of Congress to understand how much is at stake should the tax credits not be extended in September. Our members and allies will be sharing their sense of urgency with the nation’s political leaders as they gather here in Denver and next week in Minneapolis,” he adds.
