Dow Corning speeds up solar panel production rates
MIDLAND, MICHIGAN, USA, September 1, 2008. Dow Corning Corp. has announced a new manufacturing process for solar panels that increases production rates and lowers costs.
The process, which features new developmental silicone materials, works in conjunction with the developmental Dow Corning PV-6100 Encapsulant series. It is said to provide a clear laminate to protect each solar cell in a panel and can replace commonly used ethyl vinyl acetate resin.
The silicon-based material provides higher watt efficiency, longer module life, and optimum UV resistance; and equipment for the new process requires less capital and less factory space.
The process and encapsulant series are being piloted by “select partners” in the Dow Corning Solar Application Center in Freeland, Michigan, and are expected to be commercially available in mid-2009.
