DONCASTER, UK, September 2, 2008. Soil Mechanics has been awarded a £1.4 million ground investigation contract from EDF Energy for the proposed construction of a 90 MW offshore wind farm.
The wind farm, which will be located in the North Sea between Redcar and the mouth of the River Tees will have up to 30 turbines with a peak output of up to 90 MW.
Soil Mechanics started its investigations in June, which will take ten weeks to complete. The company will determine the strength and stiffness properties of the soils and rocks in the proposed wind farm area.
“This work forms part of a series of investigations and monitoring to finalise the foundation design and take the project forward towards construction with a view to commissioning the wind farm around 2011. The information Soil Mechanics will provide is crucial to understanding the ground properties and the bearing it can have on this whole process,” says Gareth Lewis, Teesside Offshore Wind’s Technical Manager.
